CIG was originally listed on the JSE’s Alternative Exchange (AltX) in 2007 as Buildworks Group Limited.

At the time of its listing, Buildworks was primarily engaged in the supply of heavy building materials to the construction industry. The company comprised of two divisions – the building products division and the aggregates division.

The building products division houses its brick manufacturing business, West End Claybrick, which manufactures a range of clay bricks and roofing tiles. The aggregates division, Drift Supersand, is primarily a quarrying operation that supplies sand, gravel and stone to its customers in the construction sector including the road construction industry.

In 2009, Buildworks acquired the unlisted company, Consolidated Power Projects (Pty) Limited (Conco), which is a major player in the power distribution sector in sub-Saharan Africa, Africa and the Middle East.

That transaction changed the focus of the business away from the provision and supply of building materials towards being a company predominantly occupied with the distribution of electrical power through the provision, on a turnkey construction basis, of high voltage electrical substations and the transmission of power through the provision of high voltage overhead cabling. CIG is also now investing heavily in “green” energy solutions – including the design and construction of wind farms and other alternative energy sources.

Since the Conco transaction, the supply of heavy building materials has consequently become a relatively minor part of CIG’s total business, contributing some 15% of total revenue.

In recognition of this transition, it was decided in September 2010 to change the name of the company from Buildworks Group Limited to Consolidated Infrastructure Group Limited, which more accurately describes the nature of the businesses that CIG is involved in.

At the same time it was decided to migrate the company’s listing from the Alternative Exchange to the Main Board of the JSE. This name change and migration to the Main Board of the JSE took place in September 2010.

CIG’s shares are now listed under the Electrical Components and Equipment sector of the Main Board of the JSE and the company has an annual turnover that is in excess of R1 billion.

Conco provides high voltage electrical substations and the accompanying overhead high voltage cabling which forms part of the national power distribution network. It is also moving into the design, development and provision of alternative power sources.
